Charity’s Glossary
At times I tend to use a great deal of jargon when talking about philanthropy and the not-for-profit world. So, below is a list of the various terms I use and what they mean in the context of the not-for-profit world.
Not-for-Profit/Non-Profit: An organization with an official not-for-profit designation from the IRS. Mostly I talk about charities with a 501(c)(3) designation, which encompasses: Religious, Educational, Charitable, Scientific, Literary, Testing for Public Safety, to Foster National or International Amateur Sports Competition, or Prevention of Cruelty to Children or Animals Organizations.
NPO: Non-Profit Organization
Third Sector: Also called the non-profit sector; the first two are the public and private sectors.
Development: A common official name for the fundraising department of any given NPO.
